Single Storey Rear Extension & Two Storey Side Extension
A semi-detached property located on the outskirts of Swansea. This existing 3 bed property lacked the facilities to meet the needs of modern family life. Therefore, the owners proposed to extend to the side and rear.
The side extension was to be built over the existing garage to retain the storage area whilst adding a master bedroom above with its own en-suite. The rear, however, needed to encapsulate the communal space and connect with the south orientated garden.
Darkin Architects proposed a unique design that makes use of an indoor-outdoor space. Originally an undercover breakfast area to the side of the rear extension with a Skillion and lean-to roof and incorporated east facing windows to capture morning rays. The main rear extension space offered a kitchen diner with bi-folds that directly access the garden and a raised patio area. Roof windows also invoked the sense of a heightened space. As a feature, the roof needed to make an impact even at night; subsequently, floor based up-lighters dramatised the roof angle and overhang. The design concluded with a simple design to incorporate patio doors, Velux roof windows which are all brought together by contemporary material choices.
